For obvious reasons fans everywhere are at the edge of their seats to see what happens on Season four of OITNB. Considering the cliffhanger we were left with following fan favorite Pousey’s (portrayed by Samira Wiley) death, there’s no idea which direction it can take. Critics are already calling season five the darkest. According to Netflix season five is set to be released on June 9th. Unfortunately there was a leak back in April in which hackers gained access to stolen episodes but real fans didn’t pay it much attention and are awaiting the return of the women of Litchfield Penitentiary. So if you haven’t gotten caught up, please do ASAP.
Chewing Gum is a British sitcom written by and starring Michaela Coela. You seriously need the goofiest sense of humor to get into the show. Coela herself has stated that she can’t work with other writers on the show because it is so purely a reflection of her own mind which explain the two very short seasons. Coela’s character Tracey Gordon is just that, a character. From publicly embarrassing herself through awkward moments, some of which are hard to watch, to embracing who she is and even comparing herself to Beyonce. If you’re into awkward love triangles as well as inner battles with self illustrated through freeze frames, this is the show for you. Seasons one and two are on Netflix now and three is on the way!
Girlboss is based on the true story of Nasty Gal’s founder Sophia Armoruso based on her published memoirs entitled “Girlboss”. From petty theft to owning a multimillion dollar fashion label, her story is one that should empower women looking to become entrepreneurs in the digital age. Set in San Francisco back in 2006 before things took off for Armoruso, played by Britt Robertson, we watch how a grind of reselling worn clothing evolves into mass production. So if you have a boss mentality of are looking to break into the fashion world this is the show for you, but some may actually prefer to read the memoir.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars Ellie Kemper, and after experiencing the show’s satire in just the first few minutes of season 3 there’s no surprise that it was created by Tina Fey. The show follows the life of Kimmy Schmidt after being rescued from a cult where she was held against her will for 15 years. With a positive attitude and determination to turn her life around the Schmidt does everything she can to appear unbreakable. Although her past sounds traumatic, the producers make light of it through flashbacks as it impacts her present life in New York City. Originally aired on NBC, Netflix bought the show after the first season, the show has gained quite the audience. Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix!
Dear White People follows the lives of African American students attending an Ivy League school and the situations they encounter which draw back to racism in a seemingly post-racial environment. The truth unfolds as Samantha White (portrayed by Logan Browning) and Lionel Higgins (portrayed by DeRon Horton), both representatives of the student media teams inquire about the background of the school’s funding. The show was picked up by Netflix after the success of the movie, both directed by Justin Simien. Consisting of 10 episodes, that you can’t break away from, the shows touches on issues of social acceptance, skin tones, homophobia and police brutality. In other words, it gets real and fans are definitely looking forward to season two.
