People born within the early 1980’s through the mid 1990’s are part of the generation of Millennials, also known as Generation Y. The generation is best known for being tech-savvy and social media addicted, but there are many other ways to spark Millennials’ interests. They are also known for being go-getters and high achievers. Many have been successful enough to start their own businesses through their personal, social media accounts and other public outlets. I had the chance to interview two young ladies who are part of the prosperous generation, and who have had the opportunity to start their own businesses. Maybe by the end of this article you will be inspired to strike up your own production! Meet Akilah and Kianna!
Akilah is a 21-year-old business owner who is originally from Pasadena, California. She attends Georgia State University, where she studies Finance. As a young businesswoman, Akilah plans on pursuing a career in Business Management and Entrepreneurship, as well as owning credit unions and local banks. Akilah is a part of three, yes, THREE businesses! She is the cofounder of Nectar Atlanta, a music marketing agency, where she also holds the position of Event Coordinator. While in high school, Akilah started her own jewelry design company titled, A.D. Jewls. Akilah designs beautiful, custom accessories such as waist beads, gold medallions, tiaras, anklets and bracelets. Akilah says, “I discovered that there is a significant power in jewelry. Jewelry is an important way to pay homage to the strength in our history, while promoting self love and beauty.” Akilah has also started a creative way to teach others about the importance of money management. With her third business, A. Duniani Finances, you can learn great ways to budget your money well. Contact Akilah at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Akilah’s confidence in her work is unmatched. She has always wanted to be her own boss, and she is doing just that! A.D. Jewls has allowed Akilah to partake in bead shows in D.C. and New York. She also provides custom jewelry to yoga studios in the Los Angeles area. You go, girl! When asked about her inspirations, Akilah replied, “My family inspires me. I have inherited a deeply rooted sense of self. When I lose track of my motivation, I focus my energy within and stay as persistent as possible.” Akilah, a successful, young entrepreneur, is showing out for millennials across the globe! Much love, Akilah!
Kianna, a native of the beautiful island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, is a proud business owner of Nice Girl. Nice Girl is a brand new clothing line that is set to officially release by July. The line will include loungewear and items such as lingerie and bodysuits. For the launch, Nice Girl will have super, cute accessories and lashes for the ladies to choose from! When asked about her brand, Kianna stated, “I’m working on creating a brand that brings out both the fun and sexiness of your everyday girl. I cannot wait to bring this whole brand to life!” Born in 1996, Kianna is 20 years old, and she now calls Atlanta, Georgia home as she attends Georgia State University along with Akilah. As a Marketing major, Kianna has learned a lot about the business world. She has allowed her education to be the foundation for her start up of Nice Girl. She promised herself that by the age of 21, she would own her own business. Kianna is well on track to fulfilling her dream! Although Kianna is just getting started, people have already showed interest in her line. You can, too, by going to shopnicegirl.com and joining her websites’ mailing list for exclusive insights and deals. Kianna plans on attaining a cosmetology license after she graduates with her degree in Marketing, as she is passionate about makeup and nail care. She has made up many faces in the Atlanta area with her unique touch. Although a millennial, Kianna enjoys breaks from social media as she says, “I love to read a lot of books focused on Marketing, financial success, relationships, and being a girl boss!” Kianna is a hardworking, talented and ambitious young woman. Best wishes to you, Kianna!
For all of the women out there who are interested in beginning their own companies, here are messages from the business owners themselves.
Akilah: “The only opinion that matters is your own! Trust yourself. No one else has the power to shape your
reality but you! Plan. Execute. Follow up. Refine. Your number one job is to NEVER QUIT!”
Kianna: “Just go for it! The hardest thing to do is start, but once you do, I promise that you will thank yourself
later. Success won’t happen overnight. Trust the process!"
